Water tariffs are slated to rise on June 1, resulting in a major increase in the cost of this crucial resource for customers.

Following review of the second quarter of 2023, the PURC has announced an 18.36% rise in electricity and natural gas pricing for all consumer categories.

The Public Utility Regulatory Commission (PURC) highlighted in a statement released on Thursday, May 18, that the decision to hike water tariffs for the second quarter of 2023 was based on various considerations, including the necessity for sustainable water resource management.

The cost of power, higher expenses related with chemicals used in raw water treatment, the exchange rate between the Ghana Cedi and the US Dollar, and inflation are among these reasons.

“this review has become necessary to maintain the real value of the cost of supply of the utility services and to ensure that the utility companies do not under or over-recover costs.” according to the statement.

It went on to say that, although under-recovery has a detrimental impact on enterprises’ ability to provide services to customers and has the potential to cause power outages, over-recovery overburdens customers.
