Prolific highlife songwriter, singer and performer, Akwaboah Jnr has said that Black Sherif’s style of music is more of highlife than hip-pop as many music lovers and award schemes describes his works.
The style of music Black Sherif – the hottest musical artiste in Ghana has generated lots of conversations on both old and new media platforms. Akwaboah believes Sherif’s songs sounds more highlife than hip-pop.
According to a story by myjoyonline.com, Akwaboah Jnr told Kojo Yankson on the super morning show on Joy Fm that, if Sherif categorizes his songs as highlife instead of hip-pop, it will help the agenda to project highlife music to the western world.
“I will describe most of the songs Black Sherif does as highlife, when you listen to the way he sings and everything, but he has been pushed to hip hop. So going global, imagine calling what he is doing highlife, that would have been highlife on the map, but in a way it appears we are pushing him into hip hop or Afrobeats. So now what is happening is, he is out there but they are calling it hip hop or Afrobeats,” he said.
Aside Akwaboah Jnr, contemporary highlife singer, Kwabena Kwabena has also said it very disappointing when people describes Black Sherif’s songs as hip-pop. He believes most of the songs the young man does is higlife.
The twenty-one year old singer shot to fame in the early months 2021 with his monster hit songs first sermon, second sermon which attracted a remixed version with Nigerian Grammy award singer, Burna Boy. After this collaboration, the story of Blacko changed as he got unimaginable exposure and later signed onto ‘Empire’ – one of the biggest record labels in the world.
Blacko’s career started in 2019 where released ‘Cry On Me’ on YouTube, in 2020 he dropped ‘Money’ which got him close to mainstream.
In 2022, he released his debut album titled ‘The Villian I Never Was’ – the 14 track album has become one the biggest and most popular on digital music stores across the world.
Blacko has on lots of many awards including best new artiste of the year at both VGMA and 3MUSIC awards.
